Childrens Dentistry

Dr Peter and Dr Sharon have had a combined experience of over thirty years of clinical teaching in childrens dentistry (Pedodontics) at Faculty of Dentistry, University Of Sydney. They pursue the goal of good dental health and education with their young patients from an early age reinforcing prevention through their young lives and using noninvasive treatment techniques where possible.
Children should visit the dentist by their second birthday as it is important for the baby teeth to receive proper preventative dental care. At this receptive age it is also easier to start laying down the foundations of good oral hygiene and dietary advice that will benefit their general and dental health throughout their lives. Some children are at higher risk for developing tooth decay at a younger age.
Regular check ups with cleaning and fluoride treatment will help to prevent decay from progressing .

Sometimes brushing is not enough especially in the hard to reach fissure or grooved areas in the molar teeth.
Fissure sealing techniques help in preventing decay by sealing these deep grooves of chidrens teeth where microscopic plaque and bacteria settle. The sealants which are flowable composite resins are applied to children’s teeth as a preventive measure. It is basically painted on the grooves using a polymerising white light to set the film- simple, noninvasive and preventative. Sealants typically last for 3-5 years.

In the rare circumstances that more invasive techniques are necessary or the child is anxious, nitrous oxide sedation is available for treatment. Sedation dentistry allows patients to experience dental treatment in a safe, comfortably and relaxing manner.
