Bleeding Gums, Gum Disease and Receding Gums with Sensitive Teeth

Signs of Gum disease (Periodontal disease) are:

- Red, swollen, tender or bleeding gums
- Gums that bleed when brushing or using dental floss
- Bad breath or bad taste in your mouth
- Gums that have shrunk or appear to be pulling away from your teeth
- Pus or any discharge or abscesses around the gums or between the teeth
- Loose teeth or teeth that have drifted or changed position
- Sensitivity to hot and cold

Periodontal treatment ranges from simple, regular cleaning by the dentist in order to remove the causative plaque and calculus to more complex methods of root planing and curetting the gums. These techniques will eliminate the gum pockets around the teeth where the beginnings of gum disease occur.Good maintenance of oral hygiene (both brushing and floss or other forms of interdental cleaning) should occur after treatment and where possible smoking of cigarettes should be reduced or eliminated.
